Edward Tsiri Agbenyega, BSc, MB ChB, PhD

Dr Agbenyega received his BSc in human biology from the University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana, and became Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery at the same university in 1982. He received his PhD in physiology from the University of Manchester in 1991. Since 1991 he has been Senior Medical Officer at the Department of Child Health, Komfo Anokye teaching Hospital (KATH). Since 1992 he has been Head of the Department of Physiology, School of Medical Sciences, University of Science and Technology Kumasi, Ghana, and Senior Lecturer at the same Department since 1995. Since 1997 he has been Deputy-Vice Dean of the School. His expertise is patophysiology of muscle disorders and malaria. His hobbies are watching and playing football, as well as playing table tennis.

Professor Bani-Hani received his MB Ch.B at the Baghdad University, Iraq, in 1984. He received his FRCS from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow, in 1991. He received his M.D from the Research School of Medicine, Leeds-UK in 2002 for his studies on Barrett’s esophagus: Clinical behaviors and malignant potential. He completed his specialization in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery in Manchester and Leeds between 1993 and 1998. Since 1998 he has been working in the Department of Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine and King Abdullah University Hospital, Irbid-Jordan and in 2002 he has become a Head of this Department. His professional activities include gastrointestinal cancer, oncosurgery, and Barrett’s esophagus. He is an author of more than 42 scientific publications. He serves frequently as a reviewer for a number of medical journals.

Dr. Donev received his MD at the St. Cyril and Methodius University Medical School, Skopje, Macedonia, in 1973, where he completed his specialization in social medicine in 1981. From 1983 to 1985 he had his postgraduate studies of social medicine in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and later on received his PhD in 1993 at the Skopje Medical School. He realized his postdoctoral studies in public health (Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program) at Emory University School of Public Health in Atlanta, GA, USA, in the academic year 1993/94. Since 2003 he has been Regular/ full-time Professor of Social Medicine at the Skopje University School of Medicine. His professional and research interest include broad scope of activities related to prevention and control of non-communicable diseases and other priority health problems, health status and needs for health care of the vulnerable population groups, organization of health systems and health care reforms, health economics and quality of health care, health education, and health care management.

She graduated Computer Science University, with intensive post-graduate specialisation in public health and health management, both in Romania and abroad. Her current position is computer engineer at the Institute of Public Health, Bucharest, Romania, and short-term consultant for WHO and other private consultancy companies. Main areas of interest and expertise: Design and Implementation of Health Information Systems, Health Status Evaluation (Situation analysis, Needs Assessment, Priority Setting), Public Health Strategies design, Health Policy Development and Analysis, Human Resources Research and Planning, Training Programmes Development. She is a member of European Public Health Association, Forum of Public Health in South Eastern Europe and last but not least, regional editor for Croatian Medical Journal.

 

Mileta Golubovic, MD, PhD - Department of Pathology, University Center of Montenegro, Faculty of Medicine in Podgorica, University of Montenegro

Dr Golubović is Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Medicine in Podgorica and specialist in pathology at the University Center of Montenegro since 2000. His professional interest is focused on tumor pathology, particularly the analysis of neuroendocrine differentiation and prognostic factors in tumours. He has published a number of research articles in peer reviewed journals and lectured at research and professional meetings and congresses in the field of pathology, as well as e-learning. Dr Golubović teaches Pathology to medical and dental students, as well as at the School of Nursing of the University of Montenegro. He works as a supervisor or co-supervisor for a number of doctoral students.

Dr Hoka’s field of work is anesthesiology, cardiac anesthesia, cardiovascular physiology, intensive care, pain management, and palliative care. His current position is Professor and Chairman at the Department of Anesthesiology, Kitasao University, School of Medicine, Kitasao, Sagamihara, Japan. He maintains that being an Editorial Board member of the Croatian Medical Journal is one of his greatest achievements and sources of pride, which he cherishes through the editorial work in his part of the world.

Dr Kardas received his MD at the Medical University of Lodz, Poland, in 1994, where he has also completed his specialization in family medicine in 1998. He received PhD degree in 1999 for his studies on patient compliance. Since 1998 he has been working in the Department of Family Medicine, Medical University of Lodz, and in 2002 he has become a Head of this Department. His professional activities include patient compliance, chronic conditions and family medicine. He is an author of a number of scientific publications. He serves frequently as a reviewer for a number of medical journals and is also a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Medicine. He serves as the only Polish expert to the European Advisory Borad on Patient Compliance. Currently, he is a director of Polish arm of two European Union’ founded scientific projects.

Dr. Karmela Krleža-Jerić is a specialist in public health and works at the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) in Ottawa, Canada. Her major interests are the quality, transparency and impact of clinical research. She led a development of CIHR trial database and is managing the registration of trials funded by CIHR. Dr Krleža-Jerić is engaged in trial registration dialogue from local to global levels and is leading the Ottawa Group’s dialogue and development of Ottawa Statements. Since 2004 she has been actively participating in the WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform (ICRTP) project and is a member of its Scientific Advisory Group (SAG). A graduate of medicine at the Sarajevo University (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Karmela holds Masters and Doctorate degrees from Zagreb University (Croatia), and did post-doctoral studies at McGill University and University of Montreal (Canada).

Dr Malcolm is Professor Emeritus of the University of Otago and director and consultant in Aotearoa Health, which provides consultancy services to a wide range of agencies in health policy, management, and research. Previously he was Professor of Community Health at the Wellington School of Medicine, New Zealand. For four years he was a member of the WHO Global Advisory Committee on Health Research and previously a member and Chairman of the Western Pacific WHO Committee on Health Research. He has researched and published extensively on New Zealand's recent health reforms, especially in primary care development including an evaluation of the development of primary care organizations and their progress in budget holding and moves towards clinical governance.

Dr Mujagic is Visiting Scholar at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University, Institutional Review Board Member for Harvard University Cancer Center, Boston and Consultant for Xanthus Pharmaceuticals, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. He graduated from the University of Zagreb Medical School in 1968 where he also received his basic clinical training. He obtained his Masters degree from the University of Zagreb in 1973 and his PhD from the Universities of Essen, Germany and Zagreb in 1976. He received his specialty training in Internal medicine in Europe and from the University Medical Center in Sarajevo. He worked at Institute Rudjer Boskovic from 1969-1971 and Central Institute for tumors in Zagreb from 1971-1977, the National Cancer Institute of the USA in Bethesda from 1978-1979 and then from 1980-1984, at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York, from 1984-1985, at the Universities in Banjaluka and Tuzla and on several occasions as a Visiting Professor at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University from 1998-2005. He currently lives in Boston, USA. He is specialist in Internal Medicine/Oncology and Professor of Medicine and Oncology. He published 97 research papers, is reviewer for several prestigious scientific journals and is cited around the globe. His areas of expertise are: Design and conduct of Clinical trials, Cancer Chemotherapy and Cancer drug safety.

 

Zora B. Nešković-Konstantinović, MD, PhD

Dr Zora Neskovic-Konstantinovic is medical oncologist at the Institute of Oncology and Radiology of Serbia, Belgrade. She started her research career as a voluntary fellow in the Laboratory for Experimental Oncology, Faculty of Medicine in Belgrade, then moved to clinical practice and research. She finished the specialization in Internal Medicine, and has cooperated in several research projects, funded by the Ministry of Science of Serbia. She also has participated in international clinical research groups, and national working group of the Republic Ministry of Science and National working group for early breast cancer diagnosis and treatment of the Serbian Ministry of Health. She is currently in positions of the member of Institutional Breast Cancer Committee, member of the Institutional Scientific Board, and member of the EORTC Breast Cancer Group. Dr Zora Nešković mainly focussed her work to breast cancer research, investigating the clinical relevance of steroid and growth factor receptors, as well as other important clinical aspects of breast cancer. Currently teaching on the post-graduate courses in Oncology, she is trying to improve the implementation of clinical research results in everyday medical practice. She published about 50 research papers in cited international medical journals.

Dr Norman is the Senior Vice President of Carondelet Health System, a nationwide organization of hospitals, medical clinics, nursing homes, and behavioral health centers. He is the senior medical officer of the System, managing all aspects of clinical quality, technology assessment, and cost containment and resource utilization. He is a family practice physician and Clinical Associate Professor of Family Medicine and Health Systems at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle. He has researched and published scholarly reports on the topics of quality assurance in the ambulatory setting, preventive medicine, health systems analysis and public policy, and automated systems to improve the quality of care.

Since 1995 she has been in Cukurova University Faculty of Medicine Department of Family Medicine. Her major research interests include smoking behavior, quality of life, adolescent health, patient satisfaction. Professor Karen Sliwa, MD, PHD, FESC, DTM&H

Prof. Karen Sliwa, is the director of the Soweto Cardiovascular Research Unit ( www.socru.org), Department of Cardiology, Baragwanath Hospital, University of the Witwatersrand

Born in Germany Karen has lived and worked in South Africa since 1992. For the last 10 years her main focus of research has related to immune activation in idiopathic and peripartum Cardiomyopathy (heart failure). More recently, Karen initiated and currently leads a large collaborative project*, The Heart of Soweto Study, to better understand the emergence of heart disease in Africa’s largest community of Black Africans in epidemiological transition. This involves a large cardiac registry capturing more than 9000 patients from Soweto and community focused awareness and intervention programs. As part of her research program, Karen established strong collaborations with a range of prestigious national and international clinical and academic centers. This includes as Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town; Maputo University, Mozambique; Hannover University, Germany; University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia (Adjunct professor)*, and The Baker Institute, Melbourne Australia*. Karen is currently the president of the South African Heart Failure Society ( www.hefssa.org). She is an editorial consultant to the prestigious medical journal ‘The Lancet’ and working group member of the international campaign to revitalize academic medicine (ICRAM).

Vladimir J Šimunović, MD. M.Sc, PhD

Dr. Šimunović received his MD degree from the University of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina (1971) and became Specialist of General Surgery (1976) and Neurosurgery (1980). Part of his postgraduate training he received at Harvard University (Mass. General Hospital 1979/1989). He received his Master of Science degree in 1982 and his PhD degree in neuroscience from the University of Sarajevo. VJŠ worked as head of neural trauma service in Sarajevo University Hospital and in Sarajevo and Mostar war hospital during 1992-95 war. At that time he worked as Deputy Surgeon General in Sarajevo (1992-93) and as Deputy Minister of Health, Croatian Republic Herzeg-Bosnia (1993-94). After war he was active as an Adviser to Minister of Health of Federation of BH (1995-2000); as Team Manager in health related projects of World Bank in BH 1999-2000), as vice-dean for science at School of Medicine Mostar University (1997-2003) and as vice-dean for science at School of Health Study Mostar University (2004-present). He was the Principal Coordinator of European Union Tempus project for development BH medical libraries network (1998-2002) and the Principal Coordinator of European Union Tempus project “Dictum” for curriculum development in all BH Schools of Medicine (2003-2006). He is Principal Coordinator of EU Tempus project “Refine” for curriculum development in BH Schools of Nursing (2006-present) and in World University Service project “Integrated Clinical Skills” (2006-present).

 

Vasiliy V. Vlassov

Dr Vlassov started his research career as physiologists, then moved to clinical practice and research shifted to clinical epidemiology. In his current positions and as Director of the Russian Branch of the Nordic Cochrane Centre he devotes himself to advancement of methodology of research in Russia. As a chief editor of Russian evidence based medicine journal "Mezhdunarodnii Zhurnal Meditsinskoi praktiki" Dr Vlassov trying to speed the implementation of results of best research in medical practice and as Editorial Board member of the Croatian Medical Journal works on development of the connections between authors and publishers in Eurasia.



 

Lijana Zaletel-Kragelj, MD PhD

Dr Kragelj is an Assistant Professor of Social Medicine at University of Ljubljana Faculty of Medicine. Her special field of work is epidemiologic/statistical methodology in which she is involved since 1984. For the last 5 years her main focus of research is relating to monitoring of health behavior among adult population. Since 2001 she is a national coordinator and main analyst in Slovenia CINDI Health Monitor Survey. In recent years she has established research collaboration with several public health centers as Andrija Stampar School of Public Health, Croatia, University of Bielefeld Public Health Faculty, Germany, KTL - National Health Institute, Finland; Kaunas University, Lithuania; and many others. She is an author of several scientific publications related to identification of population groups for various risky health behaviors.

She teaches Endocrine Physiology for Medical Students at the Shahrood Medical Sciences University; Cardiovascular Physiology for PhD students of Nutrition at the Tehran Medical Sciences University; Respiratory and Endocrine Physiology for dental medicine students at the Tehran Medical Sciences; and Endocrine, Gastrointestinal, Respiratory and Renal Physiology for medical and dental students at the Hormozgan Medical Faculty. Her interests include endocrine system, diabetes, molecular mechanism involved in insulin and glucagon secretion, ischemia, smooth muscles, and endothelial cells.
